1.Increase bandwidth by tweaking QoS in Windows XP Pro
The following tweak applies only to Windows XP Professional edition.

The default system behavior is that all 100% bandwidth is available, however, if there is a running application that indicates to the OS it needs to send high priority/real time data, then as long as it has the socket open, Windows XP will restrict “best effort” traffic to 80% of the bandwidth so that high priority traffic can be accommodated. Basically, applications can make this request to the operating system for QoS support using the QoS application programming interfaces (APIs) in Windows and this only applies if a specific app is requesting QoS.

If you'd like to change how much bandwidth is reserved for QoS (the default is 20% of the total bandwidth), do the following:

1. Make sure you're logged in as "Administrator" (not just any account with admin privileges).
2. Navigate to START>Run and type: gpedit.msc
3. Navigate to Local Computer Policy > Administrative Templates > Network > QOS Packet Scheduler
4. In the right window, double-click the limit reservable bandwidth setting
5. On the setting tab, check the enabled setting.
6. Where it says "Bandwidth limit %", change it to read 0 (or whatever percentage you want to reserve for high priority QoS data)
7. Click OK, close gpedit.msc

Under START > My Computer > My Network Connections > View Network Connections, right-click on your connection and under Properties (where it lists your protocols), make sure QOS Packet Scheduler is enabled.

The tweak desribed below helps boost priority for DNS & hostname resolution in general. What this means is, it helps web pages load faster, and has negligible effect on downloads (not counting the couple of ms gain with the host resolution at connect-time).

Applying this tweak assumes some proficiency in editing the Windows Registry using Regedit (Start > Run > type: regedit). As always, backup your Registry before making any changes so you can revert to the previous state if you don't like the results.

First, open the Windows Registry using Regedit, and (after backing up) navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\ServiceProvider

Note the following lines (all hex dwords):
Class = 008 ( - indicates that TCP/IP is a name service provider, don't change.

LocalPriority = 1f3 (499) - local names cache
HostsPriority = 1f4 (500) - the HOSTS file
DnsPriority = 7d0 (2000) - DNS
NetbtPriority = 7d1 (2001) - NetBT name-resolution, including WINS

What we're aiming to do is increase the priority of the last 4 settings, while keeping their order. The valid range is from -32768 to +32767 and lower numbers mean higher priority compared to other services. What we're aiming at is lower numbers without going to extremes, something like what's shown below should work well:

Change the "Priority" lines to:
LocalPriority = 005 (5) - local names cache
HostsPriority = 006 (6) - the HOSTS file
DnsPriority = 007 (7) - DNS
NetbtPriority = 008 ( - NetBT name-resolution, including WINS

Windows 9x/ME
The tweak is essentialy the same as in Windows 2000/XP, just the location in the Registry is slightly different. For a more detailed description see the Windows 2000/XP section above.

Open the Windows Registry using Regedit, and (after backing up) navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP\ServiceProvider

You should see the following settings:

In addition to the tweaks already covered in Win 2k/XP Registry Tweaks and More Win 2k/XP Tweaks, the Windows XP Service Pack 2 introduces a few new issues covered in the article below. Please make sure you understand what you are doing before making any changes to your Operating System. Note the information below only applies to Windows XP Service Pack 2.

3.Remove the limit on TCP connection attempts

Windws XP SP2 introduces a few new twists to TCP/IP in order to babysit users and "reduce the threat" of worms spreading fast without control. In one such attempt, the devs seem to have limited the number of possible TCP connection attempts per second to 10 (from unlimited in SP1). This argumentative feature can possibly affect server and P2P programs that need to open many outbound connections at the same time.

Rant: The forward thinking of Microsoft developers here is that you can only infect 10 new systems per second via TCP/IP ?!?... If you also consider that each of those infected computers will infect 10 others at the same rate:
second 1: 1+10 computers
second 2: 10+10*10 computers (110 new ones)
second 3: 10+100*10 computers ( 1110 new ones)
second 4: 10+1000*10 computers (11110 new ones)
....
all the way to 10*60 + 10^60 computers in a single minute (that's a number with 60 digits, or it would far exceed Earth's population). Even if we consider that 90% of those computers are unreachable/protected, one would still reach ALL of them within a minute.

In other words, even though it is not going to stop worm spreading, it's going to delay it a few seconds, limit possible network congestion a bit, and limit the use of your PC to 10 connection attempts per second in the process ! I have no problem with the new default setting limiting outbound connection attempts. Still, users should have the option to easily disable or change this setting. I might be going out on a limb here, but ever since the introduction of Windows XP I can't help thinking that I dislike all the bult-in Windows "wisardry" in a sense that the system also limits user access. That irritating trend to ease the mental load on end users is somewhat insulting, considering that Windows is to make the more "intelligent" choice instead of the end user, as well as limit their access to tuning such settings...
End of rant.

With the new implementation, if a P2P or some other network program attempts to connect to 100 sites at once, it would only be able to connect to 10 per second, so it would take it 10 seconds to reach all 100. In addition, even though the setting was registry editable in XP SP1, it is now only possible to edit by changing it directly in the system file tcpip.sys. To make matters worse, that file is in use, so you also need to be in Safe mode in order to edit it.

You only need to worry about the number of connection attempts per second if you have noticed a slowdown in network programs requiring a number of connections opened at once. You can check if you're hitting this limit from the Event Viewer, under System - look for TCP/IP Warnings saying: "TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts". Keep in mind this is a cap only on incomplete outbound connect attempts per second, not total connections. Still, running servers and P2P programs can definitely be affected by this new limitation. Use the fix as you see fit.

To change or remove the limit, you can use the following program:

4. Recommended settings for Windows 2000 / XP
Windows 2000 & XP, unlike NT supports large windows as described in RFC1323 ( the 'RcvWindow' has a maximum value of 2**30 rather than 64K), and includes some other improvements over its predecessors you can use to speed up any TCP/IP transfers. , the descriptions and other options are added to provide you with better understanding and enable you to customize your settings.

All the following entries, unless otherwise noted should be placed in the Windows 2000/XP Registry under the key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

TCPWindowSize

The value of TCP Window in the Windows 2000 Registry is DWORD, representing number of bytes, with range from 0 to 2^30. The recommended values (in red) optimize TCP for any high speed Internet connection and work best in most cases, however if you'd like to use a custom value follow these guidelines:

For best results, the TCPWindow should be a multiple of MSS (Maximum Segment Size). MSS is generally MTU - 40, where MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) is the largest packet size that can be transmitted. MTU is usually 1500 (1492 for PPPoE connections). To determine the MTU value of your ISP, check out the Advanced Registry Editing section of our site.

There are three places in the Windows 2000 Registry where you can add the TCP Window parameter.

HKLM/SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize="256960" (DWORD, number of bytes) Valid range is from MSS to 2^30. Add the value as a decimal. Note: For best results RWIN has to be a multiple of MSS lower than 65535 times a scale factor that's a power of 2, i.e. 44 x 1460 = 64240 x 2^2 = 256960. If you choose to use a RWIN lower than 65535, you can simply make it multiple of MSS and turn scaling off (Tcp1323Opts=0)

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

Tcp1323Opts

Tcp1323Opts is a necessary setting in order to enable Large TCPWindow support as described in RFC 1323. Without this parameter, the TCPWindow is limited to 64K.

Note: Tcp1323Opts="3" might help in some cases where there is increased packet loss, however generally you'll achieve better throughput with Tcp1323Opts="1", since Timestamps add 12 bytes to the header of each packet.

DefaultTTL

DefaultTTL determines the time in seconds and the number of hops a packet lives. While it does not directly affect speed, a larger value increases the amount of time it takes for a packet to be considered lost, discarded and retransmitted. A value that's too small can cause packets to be unable to reach distant servers at all.

EnablePMTUDiscovery

When set to 1 (True), TCP attempts to discover MTU automatically over the path to a remote host. Setting this parameter to 0 causes MTU to default to 576 which reduces overall performance over high speed connections. Note that this setting is different than our Windows 9x recommendation.

EnablePMTUDiscovery="1" (DWORD - boolean, valid settings are 0-->False and 1-->True. Many connections perform better with this entry at 1, however, if you prefer to set your upstream to send fixed 1500 packets, you might want to use 0 instead). When set at 1, establishing connections and initial transfer speed might slow down a bit, however you will get better throughput if somewhere in the path large packets need to be fragmented.

EnablePMTUBHDetect

Setting this parameter to 1 (True) enables "black hole" routers to be detected, however it also increases the maximum number of retransmissions for a given segment. In most cases you'd want to keep BHDetect to 0 (False).

SackOpts

This parameter controls whether or not SACK (Selective Acknowledgement) support is enabled, as specified in RFC 2018. SACK is especially important for connections using large TCP Window sizes.

Shut Down Windows XP in 7 Different Ways

There are so many different ways to turn off your Windows XP computer, let's look at some of them:

1. The standard approach - click the Start Button with your mouse, then select the Turn Off menu and finally click the Turn Off icon on the Turn Off computer dialog. [ooph!]

2. Press Ctrl+Esc key or the Win key and press u two times - the fastest approach.

3. Get the Shutdown utility from Download.com - it add the shut down shortcuts for you. Else create them yourself using approach 4.

4. Create a shutdown shortcut on your desktop. Right click on the desktop, choose New Shortcut and type shutdown -s -t 00 in the area where you are asked to specify the location of the program file. Now you can just double click this icon to turn off the computer. The best location would be your quick launch bar.

5. Press the Win key + R key to open the run window. Type shutdown -s -t 00. [s means shutdown while t means the duration after which you want to initiate the shutdown process].

If some open processes or application won't let you turn off, append a -f switch to force a shut down by closing all active processes.

6. Win+M to minimize all windows and then Alt+F4 to bring the Turn Off computer dialog.

Cracking the Windows Screen Saver Password

This is an interesting hack and not many people know about it. This requires no

canned hacking tool, we will crack the password manually!!! First of all, why do we need to crack the Windows Screen Saver? How does it restrict us? If a Screen Saver is password protected, then whenever it is turned on, then in order to turn it off, you need to enter a password. It does not allow us to do anything on a system until and unless we enter the password. We will keep seeing

the screen saver until we authenticate ourselves by entering the password. No not even CTRL+ALT+DEL works in this case. An average user encounters around 20 different places where he needs to type in the password. Most people fin dit very difficult to remember even more than a single password, hence to make life easier for themselves, they use the same password in all the places. And also on some systems the Login password is same as the Screen Saver Password. Hence it is very useful to crack the Screen Saver Password.

Now let's move onto cracking the Screen Saver Password. For this example, protect your screen saver with the password, 'DOPE'. Windows stores the Screen Saver password in the user.dat file in the Windows directory. If you have multiple profiles on your system then it is stored in the user.dat file in the c:\windows\profiles\username directory.(On Win 3x systems it is stored in the control.ini file). The user.dat file constitutes the registry of the Windows system, thus we can say that the Windows Screen Saver Password is stored in the registry. First of all, you need to change the attributes of this file and make it editable by right clicking on it and unselecting the Read Only Option else you will not be able to edit it.

Once this is done, open this file in WordPad (Any text editor will do except MS WORD And Notepad.)Now look for the string: ScreenSave_Data

You will find an even number of characters after Data, this is the Screen Saver

Password encrypted and stored in the hex system. Each pair or hex values represent a single ASCII plain text character. This means that if there are 10 hex values then the password is of 5 characters, each pair of Hex values standing for a single plaintext ASCII character. So in order to get the Plaintext password you just need to decrypt these hex values into ASCII.

There are many screen Saver Password de crypters around which decode the password for you but I believe that it would be better if we could do it manually without using a third party canned hacking tool. And hey it is really simple once you get the hang of it. The only thing you need to know is the various number systems. This means that you need to know The Hex system, The Decimal System and also The Binary System.

For example ASCII character 'A' is 41h(ex), 65 Dec(imal) and 01000001 binary.

One could also get hold of a good ASCII chart which has all the number systems and their conversions. Make sure that the ASCII chart you get has Hex, Decimal, Binary and of course plaintext ASCII.

Before I go on let me introduce you to XOR. The following is the chart you need to refer to when you need to evaluate the XOR value.

You may ask how did that happen? Well it's easy. Take the case of the first digits. The Input Value A is 0 and the Input Value B is also 0. Now refer to the XOR chart. You find that the Output when both the Input values are 0 is also 0. Similarly consider the third values. Input Value A is 0 and the Input value B is 1. If we refer to the XOR chart, we find that the Output is 1. However the conventional method is to start from the right, as we are taught in school.

Hacking Truth: The Screen Saver Password cannot be longer than 14 characters because if it is longer the system will not either prompt for the password or will hang and reboot.

It's an even string containing letters and numbers. This is your password. If you've read everything

you should have changed your password to 'DOPE' which is 4 characters

long, and your encrypted password is 8 characters long, (0CA12658)

Hmmm. so D O P E is the same as 0C A1 26 58.

D= 0C

O= A1

P= 26

E= 58

Am I right? Ok, and now listen carefully; the 0 represents 4 and C represents

4 too after decryption. Put those two number together and you get

44(h). This is the way you have to do that, with every decrypted couple.

Ok grab an ASCII table and look at 44 HEX. That's 'D' like in DOPE

know what I mean?

So now I'll show you how to get the encryption scheme:

That means 0 --> 4

C --> 4

ok, now the binary

Can you still follow me? It might sound a bit weird, but trust me, it is quite simple. Read it again to make it clear.

goes different. Then the second part of the hex number, ok C must become 4 too,

so that's easy ;

will be 0DBC3F5626. Ok, 0D = E

so check it out,

So combine the 2 answers and you'll get 45! 45 HEX is ASCII 'E'!! Just like

in 'ERIKA'! So we now know how to decrypt the 1 letter/number of a

password! BUT, as you see and as you know I'll repeat this all shortly

The first password was DOPE with a first character 'D'

the 'D' was encrypted as '0C'. We knew that those two characters

represented the Hex code of the ASCII code 'D', 44! So that means

that 0C has to become 44, we did that with XOR and to make 0

a 4 you had to use 00000100, and to make C a 4 you needed to use

00001000. So that means That if you don't know the decrypted password,

but you found '0D'as first two characters of the password you need

to use the same two binary numbers, 00000100 and 00001000. So you

did that and 0 came out as 4, which is logical, and D came out as

5, using 00001000.

The Megaupload site will start with a 45 second timer counting down in the upper right hand corner.

Just before the 45 seconds is up a "Flash" ad will drop down and block the view. Close the ad by clicking the X in its upper right hand corner.

The box where the counter was will then display "Click here to download".

Click in that box which then will change to say "Loading download" and wait for a Windows (or other operating system) dialog box to pop up on your screen that prompts you to download the file with a selection to "Open", "Save" or "Cancel" button. Click the "Save" button and then the download will begin.

Earlier, while I was checking to see if the Megaupload site was working it took about 10 minutes (perhaps longer) before the "Open", "Save" or "Cancel" button popped up for me for some reason. Usually it works almost instantly; often it requires patience.

Get it out of the water as soon as possible. The plastic covers on cell phones are fairly tight, but water can enter the phone over time. But this time may be quite short - 20 seconds or less. So grab your phone quickly!
Remove the battery. This is one of the most important steps. Don't take time to think about it; electricity and water do not mix. Cutting power to your phone is a crucial first step in saving it. Many circuits inside the phone will survive immersion in water provided they are not attached to a power source when wet.

Remove your SIM card. Some or all of your valuable contacts (along with other data) could be stored on your SIM. To some people this could be more worth saving than the phone itself. SIM cards survive water damage well, but some of the following steps are unnecessary i.e. don't heat it. Just pat it dry and leave it aside until you need to connect your phone to your cellular network. Note that many phones by specific providers, such as Verizon, do not use SIM cards.

Dry your phone. Obviously you need to remove as much of the water as soon as possible, so you can to prevent it from getting into the phone. Use a towel or paper towel to remove as much of the water as possible.

Allow the phone to dry. Since you do not want to ruin your phone or lose all of the numbers in your phone book, you need to allow the phone to dry. Also, ringtones and graphics stay with the phone - not the SIM. Don't try putting the battery back on to see if it works as this would risk damaging the phone with a short circuit. Leaving your phone in a bowl of dry rice will help to expedite moisture evaporation.

Heat your phone. Apply enough heat to your phone to cause the water to evaporate without water-logging your digital screen. One of the best things you can do to save a cell phone is to set it on the back of your computer monitor or TV screen over the heat vents. This is usually the perfect amount of heat to fix your phone. The convection action of the heat vents will help carry away the moisture in your phone. Leave the phone on the heat for at least 2-3 days.

Test your phone. After you have waited 3 days, make sure everything is clean and dry looking and re-attach the battery to the phone and see if it works. If your phone does not work repeat step 4. If it still won't work, try taking your cell phone to an authorized dealer. Sometimes they can fix it.

Alternative Alcohol Soak Method
Soak in Alcohol. Alcohol is hydrophobic and will seem to draw out most of the water in the phone, which will then pour out of the phone with the alcohol. Any remaining alcohol will evaporate. Alcohol will not harm your phone but may mess up glue (from stickers and the like). Use 95% alcohol, not the regular 70% rubbing type. Do it outside! Be sure to remove your battery first. When done, leave your phone outside for a day or two to dry.

You can use denatured alcohol, which you can buy at any hardware store. This alcohol can be used on electronics and it evaporates quickly. This is commonly used to clean remote controlled cars that have electronic components, but get dirty frequently. Spray it on or rinse and let it evaporate. If you can open the phone, even better.

Tips

Don't put the battery in for at least three days, or longer if your digital screen is foggy.
Another way to dry out your phone is to place it in front of an air conditioner or air conditioning vent. Cold air won't damage your phone (hot air can warp or, in extreme cases, even melt plastic), and air from an air conditioner is dry, and so will evaporate water faster than you might think. This is why a car air conditioner will defog the windshield so effectively. Warm air from a reverse-cycle air conditioner works even better, of course. If you dry your phone in this way overnight, it should be fine by the morning.

An alternate drying technique is to seal the phone (battery, SIM card, SD card all removed) in a plastic bag with a few of the silica packs that come packed with shoes, coats, electronics. Leave the phone in the bag for a day or 2, and the silica packs will absorb the moisture.

One other way to assist in the drying process is to put your cell phone in a disposable baby diaper. Works for babies and can work for the cell phone as well.

Use a food dehydrator.
If your phone falls in the ocean or other salt water, rinse with fresh water before crystals can form after removing battery. Try opening your phone if you can. You'll probably need a TORX screwdriver for that, but it's worth it. This may void your warranty, but it is likely the water damage already has. It is likely that the dunk in water will kill the battery. Fortunately you can buy another for 20 to 40 US dollars. The phone itself usually survives. Corrosion is a threat. You may want to consider soaking your phone in distilled water to wash away any minerals it picked up from the original water.

Warnings
Don't heat the battery or it could leak acid. If you use an oven or hairdryer, make sure to remove the battery first.

If you use alcohol make sure to do so outside, and do not apply heat in any form, not even the gentle heat of a monitor. Do not hook up the battery till the alcohol smell dissipates.

Do not apply too much heat to your phone, as mentioned above. You don't want to melt or burn your phone.
Most modern phones have more than one liquid damage indicator (stickers that change color when wet) on them, only one visible to you (and sales/technician agents), and chances are, if the sticker under the battery is triggered, then the odds are that the internal stickers you can't access are tripped as well. This will still result in you paying a voided-warranty fee in the long run. Warranties don't cover water damage, insurance does.
Even if all these steps are followed, minerals dissolved in the water can precipitate on solder and component pins, causing corrosion or shorting. Components pins are packed so closely together in a modern cell phone that even a small encrustation can create a short, rendering the phone inoperable.

Be warned that manufacturers place stickers that will display "void" once peeled and some will change colors in the presence of a liquid (usually turns blue or red). This helps techs know that you have dropped it in the water, as most cell phone insurance coverage policies don't cover water damage. Also note that these stickers have been known to change colors in extreme humidity as well.

Do not put the phone (or any electronic or metal-containing object) into the microwave. You will destroy electronic components and potentially the microwave.

What exactly is web hosting?

In a nutshell, web hosting is a like a folder or directory on your computer, except it's on a computer that's connected to the Web 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And, anyone on the web can read what you put in it. To use a web host, you put your files in your space on the web host. Visitors can find your files by going to your web address (called a URL.) When a visitor makes a request to your URL, a web server "hears" that request and gets the files from the disk where your website lives, and shows them to the visitor. If you want to create a simple web page, or build a massive web store like Amazon's, you need web hosting. You build your pages using a web language like HTML, build your scripts (programs) using a server language like PERL or C#, and then you upload everything to your web host, tweak some values for your scripts (if you have scripts) and voila... your live. (That's a very, very simplified answer.)

Web hosting comes in different shapes and sizes. Which flavor is best for you depends on what you are trying to do; on what your "application" is. The major categories are: Shared Web Hosting, Virtual Private Hosting and Dedicated Hosting.

Within those categories you find subcategories such as e-commerce hosting and rich media hosting. At a basic level, the major category differences break down between cost and performance. Higher cost usually means higher performance, more tools and more resources. Higher performance often means increased maintenance on your part, though you can mitigate this by paying even more to have someone manage your hosting account.

Types and flavors of web hosting

On a cost basis, shared hosting is always the least expensive. - Shared hosting is generally aimed at beginners and intermediate users (though if your specific application doesn't require CGI or database access advanced users can save tons of money with shared hosting). As the name implies, Shared hosting is "sharing" the hosting environment. Usually your web site lives in a folder along side many other folks web sites, and the same web server process serves up all of the those sites on request. This means any site in a shared that acts as a bandwidth hog will take CPU and disk access time away from other neighboring sites in the environment. Many shared hosting providers work to mitigate these circumstances by controlling the bandwidth, file sizes and overall resource usage available to any one site. Upgrades in a shared hosting generally consist of making additional bandwidth, file size and CGI access available... basically allowing you to take up a higher priority among your neighbors. All in all this is a very good balance of cost versus performance.

Continuing the cost analysis angle; Virtual private hosting is the next major step up - It's the stop gap between shared and dedicated hosting. Virtual hosting still shares a machine or disk, but the web server software and indeed the entire operating system environment is usually isolated for each site in a virtual hosting . So, you might have a computer or disk with 10 sites on it, 10 different web servers for those sites, and 10 isolated operating environments. The advantages include better control of resource allocation and more enforceable distribution (i.e. neighbors who hog CPU and disk time in a shared environment have a more tightly controlled allocation of CPU and disk time in a virtual private server environment, so the number of cycles available to your processes are not diminished... here folks don't have to compete for each second, the allotments are usually fixed). Another advantage is that you usually have robust CGI and database accessibility... and if you have a CGI that accidentally runs an infinite loop, it won't suck up your neighbors CPU bandwidth allocations since the operating system environment is isolated. Consider this same scenario in a shared hosting environment where your CGI experiencing an infinite loop might lock up the system and prevent any other site in that shared environment from being served either ...very bad!

At the top of the cost pyramid is dedicated hosting. - This usually requires you have considerable technical skills at your disposal. Dedicated hosting basically means you have the whole machine or disk to yourself. It also can mean that when your web server falls down, you will have to restart it. Worse, it can mean if your site gets DDOS attacked that you might have to manage most if not all of the strategy to mitigate the attack. While shared hosting providers don't tend to highlight this facet, when one of their sites experiences a DoS attack, because it impacts the rest of the sites in their environment, they are highly motivated to mitigate the attack, and likely have highly skilled administrators available to do so. This is often a hidden advantage to hosting in a shared (or even a virtual private) environment. However, if your site is a frequent target of DOS attacks, your relationship with your hosting provider may be strained to the point of you being booted, or you being charged specifically to help offset the special costs associated with managing your site and it's impact on the rest of the shared users.

DNS SYSTEM

The Domain Name system (DNS) associates various sorts of information with so-called domain names; most importantly, it serves as the "phone book" for the Internet by translating human-readable computer hostnames, e.g. www.example.com, into the IP addresses, e.g. 208.77.188.166, that networking equipment needs to deliver information. It also stores other information such as the list of mail exchange servers that accept email for a given domain. In providing a worldwide keyword-based redirection service, the Domain Name System is an essential component of contemporary Internet use.

Uses

The most basic task of DNS is to translate hostnames to IP addresses. In very simple terms, it can be compared to a phone book. DNS also has other important uses.

Preeminently, DNS makes it possible to assign Internet names to organizations (or concerns they represent), independently of the physical routing hierarchy represented by the numerical IP address. Because of this, hyperlinks and Internet contact information can remain the same, whatever the current IP routing arrangements may be, and can take a human-readable form (such as "example.com") which is rather easier to remember than the IP address 208.77.188.166. People take advantage of this when they recite meaningful URLs and e-mail addresses without caring how the machine will actually locate them.

The Domain Name system distributes the responsibility for assigning domain names and mapping them to IP networks by allowing an authoritative server for each domain to keep track of its own changes, avoiding the need for a central registrar to be continually consulted and updated.

History

The practice of using a name as a more human-legible abstraction of a machine's numerical address on the network predates even TCP/IP, and goes all the way to the ARPAnet era. Back then however, a different system was used, as DNS was invented only in 1983, shortly after TCP/IP was deployed. With the older system, each computer on the network retrieved a file called HOSTS.TXT from a computer at SRI (now SRI International). The HOSTS.TXT file mapped numerical addresses to names. A hosts file still exists on most modern operating systems, either by default or through configuration, and allows users to specify an IP address (eg. 192.0.34.166) to use for a hostname (eg. www.example.net) without checking DNS. As of 2006, the hosts file serves primarily for troubleshooting DNS errors or for mapping local addresses to more organic names. Systems based on a hosts file have inherent limitations, because of the obvious requirement that every time a given computer's address changed, every computer that seeks to communicate with it would need an update to its hosts file.

The growth of networking called for a more scalable system: one that recorded a change in a host's address in one place only. Other hosts would learn about the change dynamically through a notification system, thus completing a globally accessible network of all hosts' names and their associated IP Addresses.

At the request of Jon Postel, Paul Mockapetris invented the Domain Name system in 1983 and wrote the first implementation. The original specifications appear in RFC 882 and RFC 883. In November 1987, the publication of RFC 1034 and RFC 1035 updated the DNS specification[1] and made RFC 882 and RFC 883 obsolete. Several more-recent RFCs have proposed various extensions to the core DNS protocols.

In 1984, four Berkeley students — Douglas Terry, Mark Painter, David Riggle and Songnian Zhou — wrote the first UNIX implementation, which was maintained by Ralph Campbell thereafter. In 1985, Kevin Dunlap of DEC significantly re-wrote the DNS implementation and renamed it BIND (Berkeley Internet Name Domain, previously: Berkeley Internet Name Daemon). Mike Karels, Phil Almquist and Paul Vixie have maintained BIND since then. BIND was ported to the Windows NT platform in the early 1990s.

Due to BIND's long history of security issues and exploits, several alternative nameserver and resolver programs have been written and distributed in recent years.

How DNS works in theory

The domain name space

The domain name space consists of a tree of domain names. Each node or leaf in the tree has one or more resource records, which hold information associated with the domain name. The tree sub-divides into zones. A zone consists of a collection of connected nodes authoritatively served by an authoritative DNS nameserver. (Note that a single nameserver can host several zones.)

When a system administrator wants to let another administrator control a part of the domain name space within his or her zone of authority, he or she can delegate control to the other administrator. This splits a part of the old zone off into a new zone, which comes under the authority of the second administrator's nameservers. The old zone ceases to be authoritative for what goes under the authority of the new zone.

Parts of a domain name

A domain name usually consists of two or more parts (technically labels), separated by dots. For example example.com.

The rightmost label conveys the top-level domain (for example, the address www.example.com has the top-level domain com).
Each label to the left specifies a subdivision or subdomain of the domain above it. Note that "subdomain" expresses relative dependence, not absolute dependence: for example, example.com comprises a subdomain of the com domain, and www.example.com comprises a subdomain of the domain example.com. In theory, this subdivision can go down to 127 levels deep, and each label can contain up to 63 characters, as long as the whole domain name does not exceed a total length of 255 characters. In practice, some domain registries have shorter limits than that.
A hostname refers to a domain name that has one or more associated IP addresses. For example, the www.example.com and example.com domains are both hostnames, but the com domain is not.

DNS servers

The Domain Name System consists of a hierarchical set of DNS servers. Each domain or subdomain has one or more authoritative DNS servers that publish information about that domain and the name servers of any domains "beneath" it. The hierarchy of authoritative DNS servers matches the hierarchy of domains. At the top of the hierarchy stand the root nameservers: the servers to query when looking up (resolving) a top-level domain name (TLD).

DNS resolvers

A resolver looks up the resource record information associated with nodes. A resolver knows how to communicate with name servers by sending DNS queries and heeding DNS responses.

A DNS query may be either a recursive query or a non-recursive query:

An non-recursive query is one where the DNS server may provide a partial answer to the query (or give an error). DNS servers must support non-recursive queries.
A recursive query is one where the DNS server will fully answer the query (or give an error). DNS servers are not required to support recursive queries.

The resolver (or another DNS server acting recursively on behalf of the resolver) negotiates use of recursive service using bits in the query headers.

Resolving usually entails iterating through several name servers to find the needed information. However, some resolvers function simplistically and can only communicate with a single name server. These simple resolvers rely on a recursive query to a recursive name server to perform the work of finding information for them.

Address resolution mechanism

(This description deliberately uses the fictional .example TLD in accordance with the DNS guidelines themselves.)

In theory a full host name may have several name segments, (e.g ahost.ofasubnet.ofabiggernet.inadomain.example). In practice, in the experience of the majority of public users of Internet services, full host names will frequently consist of just three segments (ahost.inadomain.example, and most often www.inadomain.example).

For querying purposes, software interprets the name segment by segment, from right to left, using an iterative search procedure. At each step along the way, the program queries a corresponding DNS server to provide a pointer to the next server which it should consult.

As originally envisaged, the process was as simple as:

the local system is pre-configured with the known addresses of the root servers in a file of root hints, which need to be updated periodically by the local administrator from a reliable source to be kept up to date with the changes which occur over time.
query one of the root servers to find the server authoritative for the next level down (so in the case of our simple hostname, a root server would be asked for the address of a server with detailed knowledge of the example top level domain).
querying this second server for the address of a DNS server with detailed knowledge of the second-level domain (inadomain.example in our example).
repeating the previous step to progress down the name, until the final step which would, rather than generating the address of the next DNS server, return the final address sought.

The diagram illustrates this process for the real host www.wikipedia.org.

The mechanism in this simple form has a difficulty: it places a huge operating burden on the root servers, with each and every search for an address starting by querying one of them. Being as critical as they are to the overall function of the system such heavy use would create an insurmountable bottleneck for trillions of queries placed every day. The section DNS in practice describes how this is addressed.

In practice

When an application (such as a web browser) tries to find the IP address of a domain name, it doesn't necessarily follow all of the steps outlined in the Theory section above. We will first look at the concept of caching, and then outline the operation of DNS in "the real world."

Caching and time to live

Because of the huge volume of requests generated by a system like DNS, the designers wished to provide a mechanism to reduce the load on individual DNS servers. To this end, the DNS resolution process allows for caching (i.e. the local recording and subsequent consultation of the results of a DNS query) for a given period of time after a successful answer. How long a resolver caches a DNS response (i.e. how long a DNS response remains valid) is determined by a value called the time to live (TTL). The TTL is set by the administrator of the DNS server handing out the response. The period of validity may vary from just seconds to days or even weeks.

Caching time

As a noteworthy consequence of this distributed and caching architecture, changes to DNS do not always take effect immediately and globally. This is best explained with an example: If an administrator has set a TTL of 6 hours for the host www.wikipedia.org, and then changes the IP address to which www.wikipedia.org resolves at 12:01pm, the administrator must consider that a person who cached a response with the old IP address at 12:00pm will not consult the DNS server again until 6:00pm. The period between 12:01pm and 6:00pm in this example is called caching time, which is best defined as a period of time that begins when you make a change to a DNS record and ends after the maximum amount of time specified by the TTL expires. This essentially leads to an important logistical consideration when making changes to DNS: not everyone is necessarily seeing the same thing you're seeing. RFC 1537 helps to convey basic rules for how to set the TTL.

Note that the term "propagation", although very widely used in this context, does not describe the effects of caching well. Specifically, it implies that [1] when you make a DNS change, it somehow spreads to all other DNS servers (instead, other DNS servers check in with yours as needed), and [2] that you do not have control over the amount of time the record is cached (you control the TTL values for all DNS records in your domain, except your NS records and any authoritative DNS servers that use your domain name).

Some resolvers may override TTL values, as the protocol supports caching for up to 68 years or no caching at all. Negative caching (the non-existence of records) is determined by name servers authoritative for a zone which MUST include the Start of Authority (SOA) record when reporting no data of the requested type exists. The MINIMUM field of the SOA record and the TTL of the SOA itself is used to establish the TTL for the negative answer. RFC 2308

Many people incorrectly refer to a mysterious 48 hour or 72 hour propagation time when you make a DNS change. When one changes the NS records for one's domain or the IP addresses for hostnames of authoritative DNS servers using one's domain (if any), there can be a lengthy period of time before all DNS servers use the new information. This is because those records are handled by the zone parent DNS servers (for example, the .com DNS servers if your domain is example.com), which typically cache those records for 48 hours. However, those DNS changes will be immediately available for any DNS servers that do not have them cached. And any DNS changes on your domain other than the NS records and authoritative DNS server names can be nearly instantaneous, if you choose for them to be (by lowering the TTL once or twice ahead of time, and waiting until the old TTL expires before making the change).

In the real world

Users generally do not communicate directly with a DNS resolver. Instead DNS-resolution takes place transparently in client-applications such as web-browsers, mail-clients, and other Internet applications. When an application makes a request which necessitates a DNS lookup, such programs send a resolution request to the local DNS resolver in the local operating system, which in turn handles the communications required.

The DNS resolver will almost invariably have a cache (see above) containing recent lookups. If the cache can provide the answer to the request, the resolver will return the value in the cache to the program that made the request. If the cache does not contain the answer, the resolver will send the request to one or more designated DNS servers. In the case of most home users, the Internet service provider to which the machine connects will usually supply this DNS server: such a user will either have configured that server's address manually or allowed DHCP to set it; however, where systems administrators have configured systems to use their own DNS servers, their DNS resolvers point to separately maintained nameservers of the organization. In any event, the name server thus queried will follow the process outlined above, until it either successfully finds a result or does not. It then returns its results to the DNS resolver; assuming it has found a result, the resolver duly caches that result for future use, and hands the result back to the software which initiated the request.

Broken resolvers

An additional level of complexity emerges when resolvers violate the rules of the DNS protocol. It has been suggested^{[weasel words]} that a number of large ISPs have configured their DNS servers to violate rules (presumably to allow them to run on less-expensive hardware than a fully-compliant resolver), such as by disobeying TTLs, or by indicating that a domain name does not exist just because one of its name servers does not respond.

As a final level of complexity, some applications (such as web-browsers) also have their own DNS cache, in order to reduce the use of the DNS resolver library itself. This practice can add extra difficulty when debugging DNS issues, as it obscures the freshness of data, and/or what data comes from which cache. These caches typically use very short caching times — of the order of one minute. Internet Explorer offers a notable exception: recent versions cache DNS records for half an hour.^[1]

Other applications

The system outlined above provides a somewhat simplified scenario. The Domain Name System includes several other functions:

Hostnames and IP addresses do not necessarily match on a one-to-one basis. Many hostnames may correspond to a single IP address: combined with virtual hosting, this allows a single machine to serve many web sites. Alternatively a single hostname may correspond to many IP addresses: this can facilitate fault tolerance and load distribution, and also allows a site to move physical location seamlessly.
There are many uses of DNS besides translating names to IP addresses. For instance, Mail transfer agents use DNS to find out where to deliver e-mail for a particular address. The domain to mail exchanger mapping provided by MX records accommodates another layer of fault tolerance and load distribution on top of the name to IP address mapping.
Sender Policy Framework and DomainKeys instead of creating their own record types were designed to take advantage of another DNS record type, the TXT record.
To provide resilience in the event of computer failure, multiple DNS servers are usually provided for coverage of each domain, and at the top level, thirteen very powerful root servers exist, with additional "copies" of several of them distributed worldwide via Anycast.

Protocol details

DNS primarily uses UDP on port 53 ^[2] to serve requests. Almost all DNS queries consist of a single UDP request from the client followed by a single UDP reply from the server. TCP comes into play only when the response data size exceeds 512 bytes, or for such tasks as zone transfer. Some operating systems such as HP-UX are known to have resolver implementations that use TCP for all queries, even when UDP would suffice.

Extensions to DNS

EDNS is an extension of the DNS protocol which enhances the transport of DNS data in UDP packages, and adds support for expanding the space of request and response codes. It is described in RFC 2671.

Types of DNS records

Important categories of data stored in DNS include the following:

An A record or address record maps a hostname to a 32-bit IPv4 address.
An AAAA record or IPv6 address record maps a hostname to a 128-bit IPv6 address.
A CNAME record or canonical name record is an alias of one name to another. The A record to which the alias points can be either local or remote - on a foreign name server. This is useful when running multiple services (like an FTP and a webserver) from a single IP address. Each service can then have its own entry in DNS (like ftp.example.com. and www.example.com.)
An MX record or mail exchange record maps a domain name to a list of mail exchange servers for that domain.
A PTR record or pointer record maps an IPv4 address to the canonical name for that host. Setting up a PTR record for a hostname in the in-addr.arpa. domain that corresponds to an IP address implements reverse DNS lookup for that address. For example (at the time of writing), www.icann.net has the IP address 192.0.34.164, but a PTR record maps 164.34.0.192.in-addr.arpa to its canonical name, referrals.icann.org.
An NS record or name server record maps a domain name to a list of DNS servers authoritative for that domain. Delegations depend on NS records.
An SOA record or start of authority record specifies the DNS server providing authoritative information about an Internet domain, the email of the domain administrator, the domain serial number, and several timers relating to refreshing the zone.
An SRV record is a generalized service location record.
A TXT Record allows an administrator to insert arbitrary text into a DNS record. For example, this record is used to implement the Sender Policy Framework and DomainKeys specifications.
NAPTR records ("Naming Authority Pointer") are a newer type of DNS record that support regular expression based rewriting.
SPF records, used as part of the Sender Policy Framework to identify and reject forged addresses in the 'From' address of an email message (common in e-mail spam).

Other types of records simply provide information (for example, a LOC record gives the physical location of a host), or experimental data (for example, a WKS record gives a list of servers offering some well known service such as HTTP or POP3 for a domain).

Choosing and Using Credit Cards

Chances are you've gotten your share of "pre-approved" credit card offers in the mail, some with low introductory rates and other perks. Many of these solicitations urge you to accept "before the offer expires." Before you accept, shop around to get the best deal.

Credit Card Terms

A credit card is a form of borrowing that often involves charges. Credit terms and conditions affect your overall cost. So it's wise to compare terms and fees before you agree to open a credit or charge card account. The following are some important terms to consider that generally must be disclosed in credit card applications or in solicitations that require no application. You also may want to ask about these terms when you're shopping for a card.

Annual Percentage Rate. The APR is a measure of the cost of credit, expressed as a yearly rate. It also must be disclosed before you become obligated on the account and on your account statements.

The card issuer also must disclose the "periodic rate" - the rate applied to your outstanding balance to figure the finance charge for each billing period.

Some credit card plans allow the issuer to change your APR when interest rates or other economic indicators - called indexes - change. Because the rate change is linked to the index's performance, these plans are called "variable rate" programs. Rate changes raise or lower the finance charge on your account. If you're considering a variable rate card, the issuer must also provide various information that discloses to you:

that the rate may change; and
how the rate is determined - which index is used and what additional amount, the "margin," is added to determine your new rate.

At the latest, you also must receive information, before you become obligated on the account, about any limitations on how much and how often your rate may change.

Free Period. Also called a "grace period," a free period lets you avoid finance charges by paying your balance in full before the due date. Knowing whether a card gives you a free period is especially important if you plan to pay your account in full each month. Without a free period, the card issuer may impose a finance charge from the date you use your card or from the date each transaction is posted to your account. If your card includes a free period, the issuer must mail your bill at least 14 days before the due date so you'll have enough time to pay.

Annual Fees. Most issuers charge annual membership or participation fees. They often range from $25 to $50, sometimes up to $100; "gold" or "platinum" cards often charge up to $75 and sometimes up to several hundred dollars.

Transaction Fees and Other Charges. A card may include other costs. Some issuers charge a fee if you use the card to get a cash advance, make a late payment, or exceed your credit limit. Some charge a monthly fee whether or not you use the card.

Balance Computation Method for the Finance Charge. If you don't have a free period, or if you expect to pay for purchases over time, it's important to know what method the issuer uses to calculate your finance charge. This can make a big difference in how much of a finance charge you'll pay - even if the APR and your buying patterns remain relatively constant. See page 4 for examples of how the methods can affect your costs.

Examples of balance computation methods include the following.

Average Daily Balance. This is the most common calculation method. It credits your account from the day payment is received by the issuer. To figure the balance due, the issuer totals the beginning balance for each day in the billing period and subtracts any credits made to your account that day. While new purchases may or may not be added to the balance, depending on your plan, cash advances typically are included. The resulting daily balances are added for the billing cycle. The total is then divided by the number of days in the billing period to get the "average daily balance."

Adjusted Balance. This is usually the most advantageous method for card holders. Your balance is determined by subtracting payments or credits received during the current billing period from the balance at the end of the previous billing period. Purchases made during the billing period aren't included.

This method gives you until the end of the billing cycle to pay a portion of your balance to avoid the interest charges on that amount. Some creditors exclude prior, unpaid finance charges from the previous balance.

Previous Balance. This is the amount you owed at the end of the previous billing period. Payments, credits and new purchases during the current billing period are not included. Some creditors also exclude unpaid finance charges.

Two-cycle Balances. Issuers sometimes use various methods to calculate your balance that make use of your last two month's account activity. Read your agreement carefully to find out if your issuer uses this approach and, if so, what specific two-cycle method is used.

If you don't understand how your balance is calculated, ask your card issuer. An explanation must also appear on your billing statements.

Other Costs and Features

Credit terms vary among issuers. When shopping for a card, think about how you plan to use it. If you expect to pay your bills in full each month, the annual fee and other charges may be more important than the periodic rate and the APR, if there is a grace period for purchases. However, if you use the cash advance feature, many cards do not permit a grace period for the amounts due - even if they have a grace period for purchases. So, it may still be wise to consider the APR and balance computation method. Also, if you plan to pay for purchases over time, the APR and the balance computation method are definitely major considerations.

You'll probably also want to consider if the credit limit is high enough, how widely the card is accepted, and the plan's services and features. For example, you may be interested in "affinity cards" - all-purpose credit cards sponsored by professional organizations, college alumni associations and some members of the travel industry. An affinity card issuer often donates a portion of the annual fees or charges to the sponsoring organization, or qualifies you for free travel or other bonuses.

Special Delinquency Rates. Some cards with low rates for on-time payments apply a very high APR if you are late a certain number of times in any specified time period. These rates sometimes exceed 20 percent. Information about delinquency rates should be disclosed to you in credit card applications or in solicitations that do not require an application.

Receiving a Credit Card

Federal law prohibits issuers from sending you a card you didn't ask for. However, an issuer can send you a renewal or substitute card without your request. Issuers also may send you an application or a solicitation, or ask you by phone if you want a card - and, if you say yes, they may send you one.

Cardholder Protections

Federal law protects your use of credit cards.

Prompt Credit for Payment. An issuer must credit your account the day payment is received. The exceptions are if the payment is not made according to the creditor's requirements, or the delay in crediting your account won't result in a charge.

To help avoid finance charges, follow the issuer's mailing instructions. Payments sent to the wrong address could delay crediting your account for up to five days. If you misplace your payment envelope, look for the payment address on your billing statement or call the issuer.

Refunds of Credit Balances. When you make a return or pay more than the total balance at present, you can keep the credit on your account or write your issuer for a refund - if it's more than a dollar. A refund must be issued within seven business days of receiving your request. If a credit stays on your account for more than six months, the issuer must make a good faith effort to send you a refund.

Errors on Your Bill. Issuers must follow rules for promptly correcting billing errors. You'll get a statement outlining these rules when you open an account and at least once a year. In fact, many issuers include a summary of these rights on your bills.

If you find a mistake on your bill, you can dispute the charge and withhold payment on that amount while the charge is being investigated. The error might be a charge for the wrong amount, for something you didn't accept, or for an item that wasn't delivered as agreed. Of course, you still have to pay any part of the bill that's not in dispute, including finance and other charges.

If you decide to dispute a charge:

Write to the creditor at the address indicated on your statement for "billing inquiries." Include your name, address, account number, and a description of the error.
Send your letter soon. It must reach the creditor within 60 days after the first bill containing the error was mailed to you.

The creditor must acknowledge your complaint in writing within 30 days of receipt, unless the problem has been resolved. At the latest, the dispute must be resolved within two billing cycles, but not more than 90 days.

Unauthorized Charges. If your card is used without your permission, you can be held responsible for up to $50 per card.

If you report the loss before the card is used, you can't be held responsible for any unauthorized charges. If a thief uses your card before you report it missing, the most you'll owe for unauthorized charges is $50.

To minimize your liability, report the loss as soon as possible. Some issuers have 24-hour toll-free telephone numbers to accept emergency information. It's a good idea to follow-up with a letter to the issuer - include your account number, the date you noticed your card missing, and the date you reported the loss.

Disputes about Merchandise or Services. You can dispute charges for unsatisfactory goods or services. To do so, you must:

have made the purchase in your home state or within 100 miles of your current billing address. The charge must be for more than $50. (These limitations don't apply if the seller also is the card issuer or if a special business relationship exists between the seller and the card issuer.) and,
first make a good faith effort to resolve the dispute with the seller. No special procedures are required to do so.

If these conditions don't apply, you may want to consider filing an action in small claims court.

Shopping Tips

Keep these tips in mind when looking for a credit or charge card.

Shop around for the plan that best fits your needs.
Make sure you understand a plan's terms before you accept the card.
Hold on to receipts to reconcile charges when your bill arrives.
Protect your cards and account numbers to prevent unauthorized use. Draw a line through blank spaces on charge slips so the amount can't be changed. Tear up carbons.
Keep a record - in a safe place separate from your cards - of your account numbers, expiration dates and the phone numbers of each issuer to report a loss quickly.
Carry only the cards you think you'll use.

What Is Forex and How to Make Money with It?

Forex is the knowledge and business of making money through exchanging foreign currencies. Forex is not a new business and its history is as old as the history of money.

There are people who have been making money through Forex from many years ago. Fortunately, with the help of computer and internet, Forex trading has become much easier. You can sit at your personal computer and trade from home without having to make any phone call or referring to any bank.

How is it possible?

There are broker companies that enable you to buy and sell different currencies through the Internet and some simple softwares. For any trade that you make, you pay a small commission to the broker company that you are trading through it.

You need to find a good, reliable and well-known broker company and sign up for an account with it. Then you have to fund your account. You use the money you have in your account to trade. Any profit that you make, will be added to your account and vise versa. Then you can withdraw the money you have made.

What currencies can you trade?

In Forex, you deal with currency pairs. There are four main currency pairs: British Pound and USD (GBP/USD), Euro and USD (EUR/USD), USD and Japanese Yen (USD/JPY), USD and Swiss Frank (USD/CHF).

In each currency pair, the first currency works as the commodity and the second one works as the money. For example when you choose the GBP/USD to trade, if you buy, you buy British Pound against USD and if you sell, you sell British Pound against USD. It doesn’t matter what currency you have in your account. The trading software makes the exchanges automatically.

How can you make money?

Buying cheap and selling expensive or selling expensive and buying cheap is the base of making money in Forex. For example If you buy GBP against USD when each GBP is equal to 1.9554USD and then sell it when it is 2.0235USD, you have made a profit. I don’t want to focus on more details in this article and explain how the profits and the money you make will be calculated. I will talk about these issues in other articles.

But the big question is that how you can know the best time to buy and how you can know that if you buy, the price will go up and you will make a profit. This is the most important question that makes you a successful trader.

There are two methods to know the optimum time to buy and sell: Technical and Fundamental analysis.

In technical analysis, you can predict the direction of the price using the analysis you make on the price chart and also with the help of some special tools that are called Indicators.

Technical Analysis is a science and if you want to start working on Forex, you have to learn it properly especially if you want to work as an intraday trader. It is not too hard to learn the technical analysis. If you are a focused and serious person, you can learn technical analysis in a few months. There are a lot of free resources over the web that you can use to learn. There are some expensive training courses but those who sign up for them are not happy and believe that they have learnt nothing. So don’t waste your money. If you are serious to learn, there are a lot of free resources over the Internet. You can also visit this weblog every now and then or subscribe for my RSS feed. I will try to share my experiences with you.

The other method is the Fundamental Analysis. This method is used to predict the future of currencies prices according to the economic and even political situation of the world and important developed countries like USA, UK, Germany, Japan and … . Fundamental analysis has a long term usage but good traders can predict the sudden changes that happen after releasing an important news about economic situation of an important country. For example when the news says that economic situation of USA is improved for 5% in comparison to the last month, USD will become stronger and people start buying it. So the value of USD will go up because of the sudden increase of demand. If you know the effect of the news on the price, you can take the proper position and make money. Of course there are two sides in this story which means if you take the wrong position, you will lose.

Good and experienced traders take the advantage of both technical and fundamental analysis whereas 99% of traders are dependent on the technical analysis.

Some good things about Forex:

1- Forex is an online home based business that doesn’t need referring, recruiting and advertising. You only deal with the currencies through the Internet. So you will not have to reply any email, make any phone call and spend any money on advertising.

2- If you learn the Forex properly, you can make a lot of money. Forex can be your full time job that makes thousands of dollars for you every month. I have to emphasize again that if you start working on Forex before you learn it properly, it can be risky and you will lose your money. It is like the driving. If you drive a car before you know how to drive, you will hurt yourself and others but if you learn it properly first, it will be pleasant and funny.

Supply and demand are the factors that determine the price in any market. When there are too many buyer and sellers, the price volatility will be much higher and the market will be more dynamic. The price will go up and down more frequently and this is what we need to make money. When the price goes up we buy and when it goes down we sell and make profit.

So if you choose Forex as your business, you will not have to be worried about competition.

Bottom line:

If you are looking for a professional work at home business to make money full time or part time, Forex is the best option. It can make reasonable money for you and on the other hand, you will not have to be worried about the issues like marketing, advertising, referring and recruiting and even you will not have to be worried about competition.

Extract a file from the Win CD

[Windows 95/98] Extract a file from the Windows CD:

Insert the Windows Startup Diskette and restart your computer.

Wait until you see the Startup Menu and choose to proceed with cd-rom support.

The DOS-prompt will be A:\>. Insert the Windows CD, type EXT and press Enter.

You are asked from which directory you want to extract; type X:\WIN9x (replace x with 5 or 8, and X with the letter of your cd-drive, usually E:\ and not D:\ because in this mode D:\ is the virtual RAM-drive, if you have more than one partition, the CD drive letter is higher up the alphabet, according to the number of your partitions).

You are prompted to type the name of the file you want to extract. Type the exact name and extension, for instance explorer.exe. The filename is not case-sensitive.

Now you will have to give the name of the file you want to extract to, usually X:\WINDOWS or X:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM (X being the drive with your Windows folder, almost always C:\). Make sure you know the right location before you extract.

The information you have given will be displayed and you will be asked to confirm it.

After you have confirmed, the file will be traced on the CD. When found, you will be asked to overwrite it. Choose all (type a) and press Enter.

The file will be extracted and replaced.

IMPORTANT: Remember to use the right CD! For instance, if you have Windows 98 Second Edition, you should not use the original Windows 98 CD. New PC's often come with the Windows CD copied to a (hidden) partition on your hard drive, but there should always be a "recovery CD", which you can use the same way as an original Windows 98 CD.

Turn off NUM lock at startup

If you frequently find yourself turning off the number lock feature when you start Windows (By default, it turns on at startup.). Then you can save yourself the time by changing the default setting when Windows starts, here's how:

Inside the Windows folder, select the new file, press F2 for Rename, delete the .txt extension, press Enter, then click Yes to confirm that you want to change the extension.
Open an MS-DOS Prompt window (select Start, Programs, MS-DOS Prompt), type; debug $ numoff.deb at the command prompt and press Enter.
Note: Replace the dollar sign above with the less-than sign, the one over the comma on your keyboard. Then, type; exit and press Enter to return to Windows. The result is an MS-DOS-based program, num_off.com, in the Windows folder.
Finally, add the line NUMLOCK=OFF to your config.sys file. Select Start, Run, type; sysedit and click OK.
In the System Configuration Editor, select the config.sys window. Type the above line, select File, Save, then close the editor.

From now on, the Number Lock feature will default to off at Startup.

Tip: To undo this setting, remove the NUMLOCK=OFF line from your config.sys file.

Set up your Briefcase

If you frequently move files from one system to another you can use a handy Windows feature called "Briefcase". The Windows Briefcase will keep multiple copies of the same files current, so you won't have to spend time figuring out which file is most recent.

To Create A Briefcase:

Right-click on your desktop and select New, Briefcase. (If you don't see Briefcase in the menu, you'll need to install this component: Click Start, Settings, Control Panel. Then select Add/Remove Programs, click the Windows Setup tab, double-click Accessories, select Briefcase, click OK twice, and insert your installation disk when asked.) Select the New Briefcase, press F2 (for Rename), type your name of choice, and press Enter.

Now just copy any files you plan to work on at another location into the new briefcase, just as you would any other folder: Click and drag the file(s) directly over the briefcase and let go. The files in the briefcase, called sync files, are now linked to the originals.

To Edit Your Briefcase:

To edit briefcase files on a floppy disk, pop the disk in the floppy drive of the destination computer and copy the briefcase files to any location on that system's hard drive. (Whatever you do, just don't move the Briefcase off the floppy disk.) Now just go ahead and edit these sync (or linked) copies of the briefcase files.

If you've moved your briefcase from the originating PC to a laptop, leave the files in the briefcase and edit to your heart's content. (Don't copy or move the briefcase files to a new location on the laptop or you'll lose your links to the originals.)

Updating Your Briefcase:

At the location where you edited the files, place the floppy disk containing the briefcase in the floppy drive,
display its contents, right-click the briefcase icon and select Update All. (Note: If you want to change an operation in the Update dialog box, right-click it and select a new operation, such as Skip.) Click Update.

Insert the floppy disk in the drive of the originating PC and follow the steps above (right-click the briefcase
icon, select Update All, and so on). The original files are now identical to their copies on the second system (where you edited them).

If you moved your briefcase to a laptop, updating is only a one-step process: Move the Briefcase back onto the system where the original files are located, right-click the briefcase icon and select Update All, then click Update. (Note: If you created the briefcase right on the laptop, connect the laptop to the originating PC, right-click the briefcase, select Update All, and so on.) Done

Play your own sounds

If you are tired of the same old Windows sounds that your computer makes, why not change them. It is a simple process and if you've ever recorded or downloaded a WAV file, then you have what you need to begin.

Create a directory anywhere you like and call it something like WAV_FILES so that you know what it contains. Save your files here.
In the Control Panel, select Sounds and Multimedia or Sounds depending on which version of Windows you're using.
Scan down the list and find something you want to play with.
Use the Browse button and find your file.
Click on the WAV file you want to use.

You can test the sound with the button that looks like the Play button on a VCR. If you like it, then click Apply.

NOTE: Try not to use long files for frequently occurring sounds. What may sound cute initially might get really annoying after the fiftieth time

Creating new file types

If you have a lot of work documents that you would like to be able to stand out, you can create a different file extension rather than the normal .DOC file format.

Here's how it's done:

Go to Start/Settings/Folder Options.

Select the File Types tab

Click New Type and the "Add New File Type" box will appear.

Fill out the description however you want

In the "Associated extension" box, type 'Work'(or whatever you want). Do not use spaces or periods in the name.

Click the New Button and the "New Action" box appears.

In the Action box, type "Open"

Click the Browse button to find the application you want to use to open your files (Word, in this case).

Click Open, and then click OK.

Now you can select some additional options such as "Enable Quick View" (if supported), "Always Show Extension," and more. You can also choose to change the Icon. OK, all done. Now your new file type will appear in the Folder Options Box.

Speed up your ports

Follow the instructions below to maximize the speed of your ports using the port settings:

Go to Start

Then Settings

Select Control Panel

Choose the System icon.

Select the Device Manager tab and choose Ports.

Right-click the Modem's Port and make sure that the following settings exist

Note: It may not be a bad idea to write down the current settings so if there are any problems, you can change the settings back to there original positions.

Click Port Settings and make sure that the Bits Per Second is as high as possible.

Make sure Flow Control is set for Hardware.

Click Advanced and make sure the FIFO buffer is checked.

Make sure the Receive and Transmit buffers are as high as possible.

Metal Briefcase

Syncui.dll (located in C:\Windows\System) stores several icons but only 2 of them are briefcases: icon 0 represents the brown briefcase (default) and icon 1 represents the metal (aluminum) briefcase.

Close Regedit & reboot your computer.

If you would like to create a desktop shortcut that will automatically boot your system into SafeMode when clicked, here's how:

Right click an empty area of your desktop.
Select New>> Shortcut.
In the command line enter this path: C:\WINDOWS\WIN.COM /D:M then click Next.
Choose a name for your shortcut.
Click Next.
Here, you can select an icon for your new shortcut.
Click Finish.
Right click your new shortcut and select Properties.
Place a checkmark in the box labeled "MS-DOS Mode".
Uncheck the box labeled "Warn before entering MS-DOS Mode".

Sometimes we want to insert current data and time, whenever we open the file in the notepad. If you are a lazy person like me, who don’t like to press F5 whenever you open a notepad. Then here is a trick to avoid this. Just add a .LOG in the first line of your text file and close it.

Whenever you open the file with that text in the first line in the notepad, it will insert the current date and time at the end of the file. You can start entering your text after that.

MetaCart is based on Microsoft Active Server Pages (ASP) technology hooked to a Microsoft Access 2000 (*.mdb) database.

After installation and setup, the system readies your site for eCommerce. Customers can peruse your catalog of products and add the items they wish to purchase to their "shopping basket." The customer then enters shipping and payment details and submits his/her order, which is then processed and posted to the database.

Hardware/Software Requirements

To use MetaCart, your eCommerce site will need to be hosted on a web server that supports Active Server Pages, such as Microsoft NT Server with at least Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0 or Windows 2000 Server with IIS 5.0.

You will also need a good website design and HTML editing program (such as FrontPage 2000 or 2002, or Visual InterDev 6.0), and Microsoft Access to create your own database or to edit the one that comes with the application. MetaCart was developed on a Windows platform and the demo on the MetaLinks.com site is hosted on a Windows 2000 Server.

For MetaCart to work properly on your personal computer, you will need to have one of the following operating systems: Windows 98 or Windows NT with Microsoft Personal Web Server and Windows NT Option Pack 4 installed (you can download the option pack from Microsoft's website); Windows 2000 Professional with IIS; or Windows XP with IIS.

The only requirement for your customers is that their machine accept cookies since the application uses browser session cookies for some features. The cookies expire when the user session expires. No cookies are permanently stored on the customer's computer.

Credit Card Processing

The application assumes you will do manual credit card processing. To use MetaCart for credit card processing, you will need an online merchant account with a bank, an account with a credit card processing agent, and a security certificate for access to your server's secure socket layer (SSL) for secure transactions. Thawte and VeriSign are the two largest issuers of SSL server certificates. Most of these services can be provided by the internet service provider (ISP) hosting your eCommerce web site. One of the largest eCommerce hosting companies is Interland, who hosts the MetaLinks.com site.

Additional Installation/Setup Instructions

Additional installation and setup instructions, as well as the End-User License Agreement, are included in the README file, in the MetaCart download package. Use of MetaCart is governed by the terms of this Agreement.

NOTE: The README file also includes resources for finding answers to the most frequently encountered problems with installation of ASP-based applications. These involve the correct directory location of the global.asa file, the proper setting of permissions on a network or hosted server, and connecting to the database. Please read these instructions carefully.

Support/Add-Ins

MetaLinks.com provides limited installation and setup support for MetaCart via e-mail only. Should you discover any bugs in the application, please notify us so we can post any fixes to our master download file.

Assistance with other types of services, such as programming and design, adding additional functionality, or hooking up third-party ASP components to MetaCart, are available at reasonable rates at MetaLinks.com. For developers and other do-it-yourselfers, the code alone is worth the purchase price.

Browser-based Administration

The application includes a set of browser-based administration pages. For security purposes, the pages are not accessible in the MetaCart demo, but are included in the download package.
